Five regions,
all within reach.
A handful of places we keep returning to — restaurants, walks, churches, vineyards, beaches. Personal, opinionated, and unfinished. From the gate at Rua dos Matos, the cathedral is ten minutes, Bom Jesus is five, the Douro is an hour and a half.
Braga.
Older than Portugal itself, and proud of it. The cathedral, the granite, the espresso in tiled cafés. A morning is enough; an evening is better.
Bom Jesus do Monte
Five minutes uphill from the villa. Climb the baroque stair on foot for the full effect; the funicular for the way down. Best at golden hour, when the whole valley turns to honey.
The Old Cathedral
Portugal's oldest, in continual service since the 11th century. The treasury is small but worth the four euros; the silence in the cloister, free.
Frigideiras do Cantinho
Beef-and-puff-pastry frigideiras, sold here since 1796. Order two and a galão; sit at the marble counter. The waiter has heard your joke.
The walking circuit
Park at Avenida da Liberdade. From there, on foot: Arco da Porta Nova → Sé → Largo do Paço → Praça da República → Avenida Central → coffee. About 90 minutes, easily two hours if you stop.
Peneda‑Gerês.
Portugal's only national park. Granite shoulders, oak woods, wild horses, and a small archive of waterfalls. Bring proper shoes; the cascades are not for sandals.
Cascata do Arado
A 20-minute walk down a marked trail. Swimming pool below; the water is cold enough to be improving. Pack a towel.
Pedra Bela
A ten-minute walk to the most photographed lookout in the park. Bring a thermos for sunrise; bring patience for sunset coaches.
The drowned village
In dry summers, the stone walls of Vilarinho rise from the reservoir. A small museum tells the story; the swim, when allowed, is unforgettable.
Porto.
A working river city in a perfect state of disrepair. Tiled façades, ironwork bridges, and port houses on the south bank that pour with quiet ceremony.
Livraria Lello
Book a timed ticket online before you go. Arrive at the door 10 minutes early; spend an hour, no more. The voucher applies to a purchase.
Cantina 32
A modern take, near the Stock Exchange Palace. The "cheesecake in a flowerpot" is silly and excellent. Reserve.
Graham's Lodge
Across the Dom Luís bridge. The full vintage tasting includes a 30-year Tawny that does not photograph well. Take the cable car back, if the queue is short.
Vigo & the Rías Baixas.
Galicia speaks a different Portuguese, eats more shellfish, and looks at the Atlantic head-on. A long day, well spent.
The Cíes Islands
A 40-minute ferry from Vigo's quay. Permit required in summer (we'll arrange). White-sand beaches, one café, no cars. Last boat back at 7 pm.
A Centoleira, Bouzas
The percebes (gooseneck barnacles), the pulpo, the white Albariño. Order what the table next to you ordered; they live here.
Cambados
The unofficial capital of Albariño. Three or four small bodegas open by appointment. The Pazo de Fefiñáns, in the square, is a perfect place to start.
The Douro.
A river valley sculpted, terrace by terrace, into the most beautiful wine country on earth. Best in October at harvest; lovely the rest of the year.
Quinta do Crasto
The infinity pool that flies over the river. Tour, tasting, lunch on the terrace — half a day, easily. We will book.
Pinhão Station
The most beautiful train station in Portugal — twenty-four azulejo panels of the wine year. A free, fifteen-minute visit; an excellent prelude to lunch.
Rabelo from Pinhão
A traditional flat-bottomed wine boat. An hour up the river, an hour back, in absolute silence except for the engine. Best at five.
