Matos Essence Villa
Folio IV · The Country Around

Five regions,
all within reach.

A handful of places we keep returning to — restaurants, walks, churches, vineyards, beaches. Personal, opinionated, and unfinished. From the gate at Rua dos Matos, the cathedral is ten minutes, Bom Jesus is five, the Douro is an hour and a half.

§ 01 — ten minutes downhill

Braga.

Older than Portugal itself, and proud of it. The cathedral, the granite, the espresso in tiled cafés. A morning is enough; an evening is better.

Bom Jesus do Monte
Pilgrimage · landmark5 min

Bom Jesus do Monte

Five minutes uphill from the villa. Climb the baroque stair on foot for the full effect; the funicular for the way down. Best at golden hour, when the whole valley turns to honey.

— open daily, gardens free
Sé de Braga

The Old Cathedral

Portugal's oldest, in continual service since the 11th century. The treasury is small but worth the four euros; the silence in the cloister, free.

Frigideiras do Cantinho

Beef-and-puff-pastry frigideiras, sold here since 1796. Order two and a galão; sit at the marble counter. The waiter has heard your joke.

The drowned village

In dry summers, the stone walls of Vilarinho rise from the reservoir. A small museum tells the story; the swim, when allowed, is unforgettable.

— check water levels before going
§ 03 — fifty minutes south

Porto.

A working river city in a perfect state of disrepair. Tiled façades, ironwork bridges, and port houses on the south bank that pour with quiet ceremony.
